Granular Synthesis

Breaks audio into tiny grains and reassembles them for textures, stretches, and glitch effects.

Granular synthesis divides audio into tiny segments called grains (typically 1-100ms long) and plays them back in various configurations. By manipulating grain size, density, pitch, position, and randomization, you can create effects ranging from smooth time-stretching to chaotic textural clouds. Granular synthesis excels at creating ambient textures, stretching audio to extreme lengths without artifacts, creating glitch and stutter effects, and generating evolving soundscapes from simple source material. Popular granular synths include Granulator (Ableton), Padshop (Steinberg), and Quanta (Audio Damage). It's a favorite technique in ambient, experimental, and cinematic music production.
