Wavetable Synthesis

A table of stored waveform shapes that an oscillator scans through to create evolving timbres.

Wavetable synthesis is the core method behind synths like Serum and Vital. Unlike traditional oscillators that play a single waveform, a wavetable oscillator stores hundreds of waveform snapshots in a table. By sweeping through the table position — either manually or via modulation — you can smoothly morph between different timbral characters in real time. This makes wavetable synthesis incredibly versatile: you can create everything from classic analog-style sounds to complex digital textures that would be impossible with basic waveforms alone. Most modern wavetable synths allow you to import your own audio as wavetable sources, opening up unlimited creative possibilities.
